Captain’s Log: Petropavlovsk Russia to Attu Alaska: Day 3

June 9, 2018 1:12 pm / John

June 10

Hi All,

ODG….~85nm to go….I can taste the peace and quiet and tranquility of the anchorage….well, ok, the passage beers/whiskey as well:)))…..so close, but still 12 anxious hours away….

Yesterday was better…..still too much motion and hard for Kathy to cook….but winds calmed to 12-16kts E and seas to 4-7′ ESE with 8 sec period…..much better. But, this am winds and seas back up…..arghhh!!!! It seems we are caught in a squash zone from a HI up north and this pesky LO SE of us…..it will blow hard tomorrow when we are at anchor and we hope the anchorage will be well protected!!!

Stats: June 9 1900UTC (7:00am June 10 Russian Time, +12hrs GMT):

Position: 52 44N 170 55E
Traveled: 167nm today; 458nm total; 85nm to go; ETA to Attu 7pm Sunday Russian time, before dark!!!; lost about 7 hours from our forecast time!!!!
Course: 91.8M COG
Wind: 15-19G22kts ESE
Waves: 4-7′ ESE, 30 pts off starboard bow
Speed: current speed is 7.2 kts SOG; has varied 6.4-7.7 kts today; passage avg is 6.7kts; 1550-1650rpm
Weather: 100% cloud cover; air temp is 47*F, sea temp is 43*F…brrrrr; cabin temp 69*F…..not sure why but air and sea temps slightly warmer!!!
Boat sightings: 6, all cargo ships on the great circle route going to Japan, Korea or China!
Hit something: Nothing
Boat Slammings: back to 3-4/hour; maybe 1 major bow sprit buried/water splashing on PH windows one/hour….shake, rattle, and roll…ugh, ugh, ugh!!
Wildlife: many birds including several Albatross and the cute Puffins and ONE Whale!!!!
Fishing: Nope; too, too cold
Sail: down
Fuel burn: 1.17nmpg yesterday; 1.24nmpg for passage, normal for 1600rpm is 1.35…..I’m still 98% confident we have enough fuel to make Adak but I’m a bit stressed on these slower speeds. Yesterday’s projection indicated we had 234 gallons left when we reach Adak so still a good safety margin!!!

Hope all is well!

John

So sorry to hear you are getting slammed on this passage. It will be over soon! I expect you’ll be in far better spirits (in all senses of that word) when you next post.
