Galapagos to Marquesas Day 12

March 28, 2013 8:00 am / John

Day 12: Wednesday 3/27

Maybe my most relaxing day. Slept hard again last night – 6.75 hours but did get tossed a lot due to these persistent beamy seas, stirred up now by a lot of squalls.

I really didn’t do much today– no repairs, projects or cleaning!!! I fished hard with +10 lures tried 🙂 )))) Kathy continued to try and clean and dry out items from the storm the other night. Les tried his experiment with the fan in the ER. We can now feel a lot more cooler fresh air but the ER temp is still around 114 deg F……hmmm!!!

One item I have not been able to bring myself to write about – it is so tragic and a real bummer – Wayne, you better sit down for this one. I lost my best and most expensive fishing rod and reel……tears are streaming down my face as I type this…..yes, Wayne, the one you specified for me 🙁 (((((((((( I’m just devastated…..it’s like breaking your favorite bat or breaking your favorite tennis racket or golf club or ski or scuba fin or mask……a very, very, very sad incident indeed. May all my fellow buds please take a moment 🙁 (((( A few nights ago when the seas got very beamy and we were doing the rock ‘n roll dance, the rod/reel slipped out of the rod holder on the starboard walkway, hit and gouged the teak caprail and then went to Davy Jones, that scoundrel…….I cannot believe how this happened….for the last 2 nights I now tie down the rods…..lesson learned the hard and $$$$$$ way!!!!!! Ok, sniff, sniff I must move on and now have the b/u out….it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles on it but it has been with me since the beginning…..I’m in a funk and slump and it will get me out of it!!!!

See, we guys have feelings too!!!!!

We now have bets down on arrival times – $20 pp – time is when anchor is down and set. I picked 4/5 7:00 am, Les has 4/5 8:30 am, Rose, 4/4 5:08 pm and Kathy the most optimistic of all has 4/4 8:00 am!!!!! We said if Kathy wins she gets an extra $20 bonus!!! We are doing 7.4 kts SOG now and the eta is 7:00am on 4/4…..go Mystic go!!!!!!

Buds: you are leaving me hanging here – who is in the sweet 16 or is it the final 4 now??????

Blog comments: thanks Freddy – how goes the diving in Grand Cayman?; folks if you go diving in Grand Cayman use Freddy, I think it is Epic Divers….he’s the best plus he will take you for the best mud slides on the planet 🙂 )))

Val- yes, this Selene performed the best – I think she is in her heyday out here just purring along!!! No rips or tears in bimini or sail!!!! The only damage was to my heart rate 🙂 ))))

Position 3/28 @ 1300 UTC:

Position: 5 28S 118 33W

Traveled: 167nm today; 1755nm total; 1245nm to go; ETA sometime 4/4-5

Course: 238M HDG, 247M COG;

Wind: SE-ENE 10-15 occ 15-25 kts; current wind is 10 kts ESE

Waves: SE-ESE 6-10′ swell; 10-14 sec period; 3-5′ wind chop 3-6 sec SE-ESE; moderate ride in the am became semi-rough ride in the afternoon/overnight, all fairly beamy; had to use stabilizers; current conditions – swell down to 4-6′, wind chop 2-3′

Speed: current speed is 7.4 SOG; has varied 6.4-7.6 SOG; avg 7.0 SOG today; 6.22 SOG total for passage (we planned for 6.0 but hope/want 6.5).

Weather: 50% cloud cover all day then 100% and squally overnight; sea temp 80.7 deg F

Boat sightings: 0 today; 6 since we left.

Fishing: no fish today 🙁 ((((, first day a big zero, 19 total for the trip; 12 bonitos and 7 skip jack. Still nothing on the grill 🙁 ((((

Fuel Burn: After 282 hours we are burning 2.23 nmpg, 2.76 gph, 728 gallons total and 24 gallons more than our plan. We are achieving the nmpg #’s we want thanks to the favorable current, but not the fuel burn, about 6-8% higher. We did most of our fuel burn tests 3-4 years ago……we are 4-5k pounds heavier due to all the provisioning – liquor, wine, spare parts – so while a little disappointing not too bad.

Sail: Still up and helping

Sorry about the fishing rod and reel, bud. OUCH!!! Looks like Rich filled you in on the NCAA. Watched Louisville play CSU last Sat. Louisville is #1 seed in tournament, and played like it. CSU hung with them the first half, but couldn’t hang the whole game. Louisville plays strong defense, play full court press (and very well) almost the whole game, made lots of steals and forced errors. And shot well offensively. I’ve got them going all the way in one bracket.

KU’s playing strong, but don’t know if they can do it. Played NC last week, but NC’s not that tough. A big test coming up against Michigan Friday night.

Hope it stays uneventful. Getting closer every day!!!!

Glad everything is going so well, but sorry about your pride and joy fishing rod and reel. Now you know why Renegade had those bright red ugly straps holding her poles in. Didn’t do much to stop the Puerto Rican thief that took off with my favorite, but we never lost one over the side. Our worst loss was when my brother left the tackle box “secured” under the pilot house table, tucked way back where it wouldn’t move… You guessed it. It worked its way across the fb and over the side. Davey Jones sure has a lot of nice tackle!

Good news here. Renegade returned to Seattle yesterday afternoon. Tell Kathy that if she thinks provisioning is a huge job, emptying a boat of three and a half years of personal effects is a monster of a job. Got the pantry and liquor cabinet and some galley stuff off today. 12 16x16x16 boxes and another dozen 12x16x12s and have barely made a dent in clearing our stuff off. Water line did come up almost an inch though! Did I say liquor cabinet??? I do think that we had enough food on board to go around the world a time or two. Bill thinks we may need a bigger house!

Best wishes for calmer seas and continued good rest at night. And… of course, my fingers are crossed for a nice tuna or mahi soon!

    Hugs,
    Debi

Well it’s a sad day John. Our Jayhawks blew a 14 point lead to loose in overtime to Michigan. Made me so mad Vana and I went out and got an Andy”s frozen custard hot fudge sunday at 10 pm. :o)
So now it’s Louisville and Duke, – Wichita State and Ohio State, – Michigan and Fla, – and Syracuse and Marquette.
Don’t really care now but odds are on Louisville. maybe next year. Safe journey
