Captain’s Log: Shaw Island

May 19, 2016 4:09 pm / John

5/18-20

Hi All,

We had a very leisurely 13nm passage to Shaw Island. We waited until the tide changed at 9:00 so we would have a slight favorable current…..besides leaving at 9:30 am is the Admiral’s preferred time to do anything:)))

We had just one of those very relaxing cruiser days….read, nap, read, sightsee…yes….pretty good sunset, stogie and scotch, country style ribs on the barbie, 2003 Silverado Merlot and Game of Thrones (reviewing season 3 and have 4&5 to watch). The anchorage was the calmest yet and we both slept in….sweet as!!!!

It actually rained 2 nights ago and is threatening again this morning….first time in 2 weeks so nice to give Mystic a rinse!!!

We had another great day yesterday. First we did a 6 mile hike on Lindeman Island to the top of Mt Oldfield (600′ high). The hike started at a closed resort and the caretakers are maintaining the trail to the top….sweet as!!! But, did we sweat….we are definitely in the tropics now….temps still in the 70-80’s but the humidity is now in the 70’s. This will help get us acclimated to being near the equator later on this year!!

Bella Vita has caught up after their time in Mackay and they had us over for a belated birthday celebration…..yep, jocularity on Bella Vita….always a good time!!!! Stacey made a yummy pasta dish and Kalle made a delicious lemon desert complete with candles….yummers!!!

Today is our 40th wedding anniversary….wow, wow, wow!!!! We have really celebrated all year starting on our Road Trip staying at the Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island and Freycinet Lodge on Tasmania. We are going to leave in a few hours when the tide changes to Whitehaven Beach on Whitsundy Island….about 13nm. This is ranked as one of the best beaches in all of Australia so we are anxious to have a look. We plan to drink champagne on the beach and then have a lobster dinner…yep, #40…..wow!!!!

We don’t think we will have internet there but we plan to go into the Hamilton Island Marina on Monday and will be back on the grid then. Hopefully our dive compressor check valve will be there….so far so good on the compressor but we don’t want to push our luck!!!

Hope all is well!!

John

Hi saw your lovely boat briefly in Bundaberg and at Keppel and again just now cruising past Cid. I hope you get a few sunny calm days at Whitehaven beach, it is beautiful on a good day. Regards Andrew & Tamara, Bluechip 3.
