Captain’s Log: Prince Rupert Canada

July 26, 2019 6:43 am / John

July 23-25

Hi All,

We had closing ceremonies with Mark and Roseanne on Koinonia on the 23rd. The day we replaced the Balmar alternator in Nichols Point Mark had gone prawning and did quite well. Roseanne sautéed the big Spotted prawns and we had a lovely dinner and toasted with some good wine all the experiences we had….wow, what an adventure!!!

An interesting event happening in PR:

“Prince Rupert’s sheltered harbor is the deepest ice-free natural harbor in North America, and the 3rd deepest natural harbor in the world. Situated at 54° North, the harbor is the northwestern most port in North America linked to the continent’s railway network. The port is the first inbound and last outbound port of call for some cargo ships travelling between eastern Asia and western North America.”

Evidently PR is making a concerted effort to expand the port and use the railway system going east and south to freight the cargo. It is in direct competition with the Seattle/Tacoma ports. Last year we experienced all the cargo ships using the “Great Circle Route” coming from Japan/China as they passed us in the Aleutians. The cargo ships go right by PR on their way to Seattle!!

We spent our first two days in PR cleaning Mystic inside and out, provisioning food, wine/beer, getting my fishing license, haircut….you know, doing life in a City cruiser style:))))

Adam and Cindi joined us Thursday, the 25th. We first met Adam and Cindi in the Galapagos when we crossed the Pacific to Marquesas!!! It was a great opening ceremonies capped with a nice dinner at the local brewery pub!!!

The Plan: We are leaving today, Friday, July 26th from PR heading to Watts Narrows and Bakers Inlet. From there to Nettle Basin, Micking Inlet, Cameron Cove, Home Bay, Weewanie Hot Springs, then Kitamat where we will drop off Adam and Cindi on 8/5.

Hope all is well!!

John
