Captain’s Log: Passage to Seaflower Cove Kodiak Island

July 15, 2018 7:55 pm / John

July 14-15

Hi All,

We have arrived on Kodiak Island…wow, another bucket list item checked for us!!!!

AND….drum roll please….we are very excited to announce the birth of our 3rd granddaughter…..Lana Grace Youngblood….born on July 14th!!!!! We got the news via the Iridium Go sat phone and we have been able to download one picture….and yes, she is gorgeous:))) Both Mom, Lana and Father are all doing well!!!!

Alittle bit more on Sand Point:
After taking most of the day posting the Attu & Kiska pictures on Friday, I took a walk amongst the fisherman. I came across a fisherman changing his gear to dungeness crab pots….his salmon fishing was a bust so he brought out of storage the last 13 years his crab pots and will try his luck. He set a test line the other day….30′, 45′, and 60′ deep and killed it at 60’…..they ate crab solid for 2 days…yummers. I told him about my no luck with sculpin fish bait….well, I’ve never heard of that but nobody likes sculpin so I guess the crab don’t either….we only use fresh salmon as the hanging bait….so there you go!!!

We decided to go to the Chinese restaurant with Spruce….turned out to be a Korean couple…it was just ok food….but on the way back we went by the tavern and a bunch of 20-30 somethings holler out to come join them….and so we did…wow, what nice guys….like all the people so far in Alaska….we had a good round discussing life in Alaska…..we made it back to the boat in time for me to post the blog and in bed early. Kathy said about 9pm Alex and his friend came by with some smoked salmon….ODG is it good!!!

We did leave Saturday, July 14 at 0700 for the 237nm overnight run to Seaflower Cove on Attu….raining and low clouds…yuck…but overall it was a good run…..not perfect trawler conditions but acceptable….wind was mainly 5-15kts and behind but the seas were still up from the big blow the last few days….2-4′ on the strbd beam and then about 2/3’s of the way switched to 2-4′ on the port beam…all short period and we did take some big rolls with lots of things flying around….ugh!!! It did turn sunny this am but as we anchored the wind came up to 15-20kts WNW….but all good in this anchorage!! Overall, 237nm, arrived 2:45pm on the 15h, about 1.25hrs later than the planned eta….the current was tidal but overall had a 0.3kt foul current….speed ranged from 6.3-8.6kts, avg 7.5kts!!!

Whale count on passage: 2 total: 2 Fin….hmmm, a bit low for our standards:)))
Total Whale Count since Japan: 77; 28 Humpbacks, 33 Orcas; 3 Sperms, 2 Blue, 8 Fin, 3 Unknown

Weather: It is definitely getting warmer…yea!!! Water temp is low 50’s and air temp is mid 40’s to low 60’s…..nice!!!! We should have 2-3 days of nice weather as we explore the southern side of Kodiak Island!!

The Plan: There is a Cannery here….Ocean Beauty…one of the oldest and several people have told us to go for a tour…..so we will do that tomorrow and take a dinghy ride along Rodman Reach. Then on Tuesday we will head up Deadman Bay/fiord….hmmm….not sure we like the name….to hopefully a nice and calm anchorage called Alpine Cove….and maybe more bears…..the famous Kodiak Brown Bear!!!

Hope all is well!!

John
