Captain’s Log: Noumea New Caledonia to Bundaberg, Australia, Day 3

September 12, 2015 3:00 pm / John

Sept 11

Hi All,

All is well!!

As I wrote the date I have those awful memories of 9/11 in the USA…..gave me a pause this am…..we are indeed blessed…..amen!!!!

3rd night out…..yep a bit foggy and pretty tired…..it was rough day yesterday and we didn’t sleep much:(((((

Boat Stuff:
Well….how to do a core strengthening exercise while at sea…..first your I-15 instruments go out…..these are the small instruments we have scattered through the boat for info….wind, depth, speed et al….not necessarily critical but we like having the info….well, they just stopped working…..now these are 11 years old so one can expect issues. So, ok, live with it….hmmm…..after about an hour it drove me crazy so I started the hunt….fuses ok, check….we have 5 of these instruments….start to check power connection to each one…..they are hooked together so if one goes out they all go out….check the PH ones first….means stretching on tippy toes and unscrewing 4 screws while balancing in rocking motion of boat….I know sounds easy….hmmmm, I welcome anyone to try it….but viola….on 2nd one found the data cable off….WTH….really, after 11 years and now you unplug…..ok, more core strengthening and I get all screws back in and we have INFO…..look, I told you it was the 3rd night out, it’s the little things that amuse me now:))))

Big Bay: This is our navigation computer running our navigation program….now this is critical. Forgot to mention but last night, after coming off a big wave and Mystic slamming hard…..well, we’ve down worse, but still a good jarring…well, no screen….WTH….the computer’s power light is on but no display….I go through a series of restarts and nothing….in fact the power light stays on when I try to turn off…..finally I turn the power switch off at the back of the tower…wait 30 secs and viola….we have power and screen….I think the jarring just scrambled it’s brain…..sort of like rebooting R2D2:)))))

The little things: For the past 2 nights events have prevented having my customary passage treat…..a Coke Zero and a Baby Ruth candy bar. The fist night was the rudder issue and the 2nd night was Mr Big Bay and those darn pesky high winds and I was searching for the right speed and direction…..but tonight…..fate left me to my pleasures:)))))…..sweet as!!!!
