Captain’s Log: Marsden Cove, New Zealand to Port Vila, Vanuatu, Day 2

May 10, 2015 12:00 pm / John

Hi All,

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!! We get to celebrate twice…..once yesterday and once today….just love this dateline thing :))))

Another trawler like day….not perfect weather but close. Winds were in the 5-10 kt S-SSW during the day. Late afternoon and early evening there was a line of squalls that came through. Moderate rain, no lightening, and winds built to 10-15 kts primarily out of the NE. The squalls moved east around midnight and the winds became light and variable…sweet as!!!

The SW swell did get pretty large….in the 9-12′ range….those 12′ swells sure do look impressive. These were those large, long period rollers which Mystic handled quite well!! After midnight the seas had that oily appearance and the swells reduced to the 3-6′ range

SWEET AS!!!!!

And, I’m feeling much better!!!! In fact I was in such a deep sleep when the alarm went off for my 2:00am watch…..I was numb for an hour trying to wake up……you know the feeling….out of body numb like….whoa……now I’m speed writing this blog 3 cups of coffee later and soon a Baby Ruth bar :))))

Actually not much to report…..reading, napping, a little putzing….boring…..YES…..just what we like on passage!!!!

Stats: May 10 1900 UTC (7:00am May 11 local time):

Position: 30 9S 172 30E

Traveled: 191nm today; 366 nm total; 782nm to go; ETA to Port Vila is Friday ~1:30pm, in time to checkin!!!

Course: 326M COG

Wind: current is 2-4 kts WNW

Waves: 2m SW swell, long period

Speed: current speed is 8.2 kts SOG; has varied 7.2-8.4 kts; avg is 7.9 kts total; 1700 RPM

Weather: 40% cloud cover this am; see squalls off to the NW; sea temp 72 deg F; air temp 68 deg F

Boat sightings: 1 today; 6 today

Fishing: Hmmm….still a bit too cold and no room in the freezer….yes I know, pathetic!!!

Sail: down

Fuel burn: 1.35 nmpg: that is really quite good at this higher rpm. It is hard to take accurate fuel readingsin this swell so I’m pretty sure it will come down. We will probably need to slow down to save fuel at some point; 1700 rpm

Hope all is well!

John
