10/1-6
Hi All,
As promised here are the final stats for 2018:
Just the facts ma’am:
-267 Days; ~9 months, from 1/6/2018 when we arrived in Kota Kinabalu Malaysia on the island of Borneo to September 30th when we arrived in Sitka Alaska (2nd time after cruising Glacier Bay et al for 3 weeks)
-Traveled 8,198nm; 2nd longest in a year, in 2013 we did 8,366nm from Panama to New Zealand
-1131 engine hours, we now have 7642 total
-656 GEN hours; we now have 8992 total; we sure used the GEN a lot less being out of the Tropics:)))
-25 nights at sea
-198 nights at anchor, 5 nights on the hard, 64 nights at a marina
-6 oil changes, 3 for Cummins, 3 for GEN
-Fuel Used: 7,021 gal
-Dollars spent on Fuel: $22,863, Avg $3.26/gal, highest at Yonabura Okinawa at $4.70/gal, lowest Hakodate Hokkaido at $2.90/gal (duty free)
-Liquor Consumed: for me to know and for you to come onboard Mystic Moon and find out:)))))
-Fish Caught: 2 Halibut (44 and 24 lbs), 47 Dungeness Crabs, 3 salmon….well, caught on the dock from friendly fisherman:)))
-5 countries: Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, Russia, USA
-Worst Wind & Seas: Two of our top five worst passages ever in 14 years happened this year. First, was from Philippines to Okinawa. We got past the Luzon Strait ok but then we had 2 days of 25-30G35 kt headwinds with 8-12′ short chop seas. We had to tack off for 12 hours before resuming course. From Russia we had 3 days of similar conditions but no tacking. In both cases we slowed down to 6-6.5 kts SOG. We took plenty of spray and a lot of motion!!!
-Calmest Seas: since we are trawler weenies we look for passages only with what we call trawler calm conditions…you know, flat seas and no wind. We had these conditions from Japan to Russia for 5 days and then again from PWS to Sitka….ODG was that fun or what:))))
-Most traumatic moment: Losing the CA44 TWICE….in Philippines and Kodiak…..this is our last of THREE depth sounders…..so a very big deal. We first lost the GPS antenna in Philippines but I rewired to use the Raymarine for both the Nobeltec and CA44. In Kodiak we had the blue screen of death but after 20+ tries to restart it DID…..and we never turned it off after that….ran continuously for 65 days after that!!!!
Best Crew: Having Mark join us for 5 weeks from Kushiro Japan to Dutch Harbor…..our stress level went way down to have such experience onboard…..as well as made the watches so much easier….just ask him how to repair a leaking cockpit drain….in the rain:)))) Just don’t tell the Russians next time you have a spy drone:)))
Kathy’s facts:
-Warm clothing bought en route: 4 long underwear tops-3 in Russia, 1 in Sitka; Warm, waterproof jacket and rain pants-Dutch Harbor; 2 fleece vests-Kodiak; 2 Hats-Kodiak; 1 pair real shoes-Japan; 5 pairs socks-3 in Dutch Harbor, 2 in Sitka
-Best provisioning: Petropavlovsk and Dutch Harbor
-Highest KSP factor: 9.5 – Trying to gain entry into Russia and being accused as spies
-Full-On Melt-downs: Losing the depth sounder in Kodiak
-Most irritating run: Crossing the Bering Sea to Attu
-Cases of wine: Seriously, people?? They don’t crush enough grapes for this stuff!! 🙂
-Favorite run: Prince William Sound to Sitka
-Best Fetches: Attu, Dutch Harbor, Geographic Harbor, Sitka
-Best unexpected surprise: Having Michael Pugh visit in Homer! 🙂
-Favorite thing about Alaska: Wilderness. So much wilderness – wondrous and amazing things seen and experienced: Far too many to count!!
-Satisfaction Factor Overall from Borneo to Sitka: 10.0
That’s our story and stickin’ to it!!!
I did post some pictures of Kodiak…..mainly Seaflower Cove and Woody at the Ocean Beauty Cannery. Here is a link to his interesting story:
