August 6,
Hi All,
We are back in Kodiak and ready to restart MAC. The plan is to leave tomorrow, Tuesday, August 7 for Geographic Harbor on the Alaskan Peninsula. It is close to 85nm and we have to time a few passes and we have conflicting weather forecasts for the Shelikof Strait so we shall see if we can make it all the way in one day. We might just get through Whale Passage (35nm) and find an anchorage and then cross the Straits on Wednesday.
Our time in Dallas was….well, very sad. Kathy’s brother was my age, way too young to pass…..so just an overall feeling of sadness in the family. The services were held on Saturday and were very nice and appropriate for the circumstances. It was really good to see the 3 nieces and their families. Josh, our oldest son, was also able to make it as Courtney stayed home with the 2 week old and the other grandchild. Dave and Dana are expecting their second child any day now and of course could not travel!! Unfortunately we could not squeeze in anymore time in the “lower 48” as the fisherman who gave us his slip in Kodiak is wanting it back!!!!
All the locals are talking about Winter coming to Alaska….a flight attendant yesterday announced on the Kodiak flight that it is snowing in Barrow so time for all the locals to go to Hawaii….hmmm, Alaska was running a special:)))) We are unsure of our exact plan but we did a tentative plan and if we still try to do it all…..Homer, Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound, we will make SE Alaska and the Inside Passage around September 10. We shall see if Mr Weather cooperates or we need to cut the adventure short and head south sooner!!
Hope all is well!!
John
