Captain’s Log: Brisbane (Manly) to Bobbin Head: Day 2

December 7, 2015 9:59 am / John

Hi All,

2nd night…..got the sleepies bad….slept really hard so kind of numb right now…come on coffee/caffeine!!!!

As I took over watch we were passing Seal Rocks….evidently a notorious section of waters with lot’s of history/wrecks…..one of Terry’s favorites. Of course, it was dark so not much to see. But it is the last corner to turn so we now have 85nm to go to the entrance to Broken Bay (gulp, not sure about that name!!!) which is where the marina is located.

Wow, did we find Nemo’s current or what….10.5kts baby!!!! By taking the rumb line we had gotten about 16nm from land and the current started to drop. Terry suggested we move in closer to land….got to about 8nm and bam, we found the current….sweet as!!!!

What a beautiful day we had…..very trawler like weather. Winds 2-8kts most of the day, clear blue sky, temp in the mid-70’s!!!! The winds have now picked up to 15-20G23 NE….all behind….the seas have built to 3-5′ off the stern so every now and then we get a good push….the autopilot is getting a good work out!!!!

Fishing: yes we did but no catching…drats!!! But, we did hear the sweet sound of a spooling reel….as I was racing back to the cockpit yelling “FISH ON” I heard the reel really wind up…oh, boy it’s a big one….and just as I got to the reel it was the end and bam, no more fish…..whaaaaa…..I looked up and I saw something gigantic….at first I thought it was a whale….no kidding, but then I remembered the whales have already migrated…..so as I’m sadly reeling in the remaining line I see this large fish start to thrash about like it’s eating MY FISH….wth….I look closer and I’m thinking a shark, but that big….then light bulb time….oh crap, that’s a great white…..this area is full of them and we are near some breeding grounds. About that time Terry shows up and he sees the same thing but he’s a little skeptical it’s a great white….well, it’s my story and that’s what I’m calling it:))))

Dinner: how about some bangers on the barbie mate:)))) Excellent…we had some from NZ…..beef and wine with peppercorn, with a salad and mac and cheese….whoa, not bad for a pinch hit galley slave….but sadly, it was not tuna steaks!!!!
